Logical Thinking

I had high hopes when we elected a businessman as President.

Mr. Trump used logical thinking in his business, and it showed. He routinely accomplished in months what governments failed to complete in years.

As a builder, it makes sense that Mr. Trump would like to do something about the sorry condition of our county’s infrastructure, but his proposal won’t work, and here’s why.

In 2009 Barack Obama spent almost a trillion dollars on so called shovel-ready infrastructure projects, later admitting that they weren’t so shovel-ready after all.

The reason Obama’s plan failed, and the reason Trump’s will, is that when you filter a trillion dollars through the federal bureaucracy, only about 50 million of it makes it to the road, bridge or runway.

The rest disappears into studies, permits, office furniture, travel expenses and three or four corporate grants “per congressman” to repay campaign and other donations.

Here’s how the President could really improve our roads and bridges.

Repeal the existing 18 cent per gallon gas tax and 24 cent diesel tax, and let the states collect it.

A typical state bureaucracy will consume a third of it, but that’s about 65 percent better than the status quo.

Once this plan worked, he could use it as a precedent and apply the same logic to most of the rest of the federal government and really make America great again.
